PORT HURON SCHOOLS RECEIVES GRANT FOR UPCOMING DR.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY SERVICE PROJECT IN
PARTNERSHIP WITH NAACP
PORT HURON — Port Huron Schools is proud to announce that with its continued Port
Huron NAACP partnership, it is the exclusive regional district to receive matching grant
funding for an upcoming service project to take place on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The Michigan Community Service Commission has designated Port Huron Schools to
receive a $500 grant, matching the NAACP’s funding to support “Make A Blanket Day”
throughout the district’s secondary buildings on January 20, 2020.
Port Huron Schools has a long history of working with the NAACP to engage students in
learning about the life and legacy of Dr. King and the civil rights movement. For the past
five years on Dr. King’s holiday, this partnership has evolved to include a coordinated
program across all district elementary schools and a contest for secondary students that
is archived on this website.
This year on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all three middle (Central, Fort Gratiot and
Holland Woods) and all three high schools (Phoenix Academy at Harrison, Port Huron
and Port Huron Northern) will create fleece child and adult-sized blankets to be
delivered at local homeless shelters. At the elementary level, all students are reading
“Last Stop on Market Street” by Matt de la Peña with a presentation from a community
leader chosen by the NAACP.
Since the beginning of the 2019-20 school year, Port Huron Schools has identified 179
students who are experiencing homelessness and many of these students have spent
time in a local shelter. The goal of the “Make A Blanket” project - other than to continue
the stewardship of Dr. King’s legacy of service - is to spread warmth and kindness
through the donation of handmade blankets, offering both children and adults some
comfort in a time of transition and trauma.
If community members would like to join the Make a Blanket service project, please
contact one of the middle or high schools listed above for times and other pertinent
